Suite à la suspension administrative de plusieurs professeurs (Peter Osborne, Peter Hallward, Christian Kerslake) et étudiants (Ali Alizadeh, Nicola Goodchild, Johann Hoiby, Hoi Yen Voong) du département de philosophie de Middlesex University, une nouvelle pétition appelle, cette fois-ci, au boycott de l’Université.

LES FAITS

Tard dans la soirée du lundi 26 avril, les professeurs du département de philosophie à l’Université Middlesex à Londres ont été informés que la direction de l’Université s’apprêtait à fermer tous les enseignements en philosophie : undergraduate, postgraduate et MPhil/PhD [qui correspondent à nos enseignements de la licence au doctorat].

La philosophie est la discipline la mieux évaluée à l’université Middlesex, puisque 65% de ses activités de recherche sont jugés « à l’avant-garde de la recherche au niveau mondial » et reconnues comme « excellentes sur le plan international » dans le dernier rapport d’évaluation du gouvernement britannique.

Ce département est maintenant largement reconnu comme l’un des centres les plus importants pour l’étude de la philosophie moderne et contemporaine européenne partout dans le monde anglo-saxon. La renommée de ses enseignements en master en philosophie s’est affirmée ces dernières années jusqu’à ce qu’ils deviennent les plus suivis au Royaume-Uni, avec 42 nouveaux étudiants admis en Septembre 2009.

Middlesex est l’une des rares universités du Royaume-Uni à avoir mis en place des programmes de deuxième et troisième cycles axés sur la recherche et l’enseignement destinés au plus large éventail d’étudiants, spécialistes et non-spécialistes, philosophes et non-philosophes. Il est également l’un des rares centres qui soit financièrement viable, allant jusqu’à consacrer près de la moitié de son budget global à l’administration centrale de l’Université. Cette décision de mettre fin aux activités du Département de Philosophie à l’Université Middlesex aura de graves conséquences pour l’enseignement de la philosophie au Royaume-Uni. C’est une décision honteuse qui revient à supprimer le Centre de Recherche en Philosophie Moderne Européenne (CRMEP), de renommée internationale. Nous devons résister à cette atteinte volontaire que l’Université se porte à elle-même.

Late on Monday 26 April, staff in Philosophy at Middlesex University in London were informed that the University executive are to close all Philosophy programmes : undergraduate, postgraduate and MPhil/PhD.

Philosophy is the highest research-rated subject at Middlesex University, with 65% of its research activity judged ’world-leading’ or ’internationally excellent’ in the UK government’s recent Research Assessment Exercise. It is now widely recognised as one of the most important centres for the study of modern European philosophy anywhere in the English-speaking world. Its MA programmes in Philosophy have grown in recent years to become the largest in the UK, with 42 new students admitted in September 2009. Middlesex offers one of only a handful of programmes left in the UK that provides both research-driven and inclusive post-graduate teaching aimed at a wide range of students, specialist and non-specialist. It is also one of relatively few such programmes that remains financially viable, currently contributing close to half of its total income to the University’s central administration.

This decision to terminate Philosophy at Middlesex will have serious consequences for the teaching of philosophy in the UK. This is a shameful decision which essentially means the end of the Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy, a hub for internationally renowned scholarship (http://www.web.mdx.ac.uk/crmep/ ; staff include Eric Alliez, Peter Hallward, Mark Kelly, Christian Kerslake, Peter Osborne and Stella Sandford). This act of wilful self-harm by the University must be resisted.
